Now you have come to the page, Choose variable. This page give you the oportunity to select which variables and values you want to display in your result of the table. A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

Documentation of statistics The statistics are based on total data, which are gradually supplemented as municipal building supervisors enter data in the register. Due to the slow accumulation of notices of building starts, the actual number of building projects started is estimated using the number of known starts. The estimation of starts data is made monthly for the latest 24 months. Data older than that are not estimated.

Construction stage

The construction stage indicates the current status of the construction project: construction actions having been granted a building permit, started building projects and completed buildings.
The data on building projects started in the latest 24 months are estimated values, and they will become revised most during around 12 months from the first release.

Classification of Buildings 2018

The intended use of a building is determined according to the purpose for which the largest part of the gross floor area of the building is used. The classification of the intended use of buildings is given in Statistics Finland's Handbook Classification of Buildings 2018.

Information

Volume (m3)

The cubic capacity of a building is the space limited by the exterior surfaces of outer walls, the lower surface of the base floor (the base of the building’s lowest space with thermal insulation) and the upper surface of the roof (the part of the building limiting the building's uppermost heated space from above including thermal insulation and protection).

Floor area (m2)

The gross floor area of a building comprises the floor areas of the different storeys and the area of attic or basement storeys in which there are dwelling or working rooms or other space conforming to the principal intended use of the building.

New dwellings (No.)

The number of new dwelling units used for permanent residence.

Construction actions (No.)

Statistics include following construction actions subject to a building permit: construction of a new building, extension of a building or increase of the space included in its floor area, and repairs and alterations comparable to the construction of a new building. A single building permit can cover one or more construction actions.
A building permit is a licence to build which is issued in accordance with the Building Act and is granted by the municipal building control. A notification must be made of all building projects subject to a building permit, and statistics are compiled from the information in these notifications.

Volume (m3), moving annual total

The moving total refers to the sum calculated over the measurement periods from one measurement to the next. The 12-month moving total refers to the sum of the observation values of the past twelve months. For example, the 12-month moving total for March is obtained by adding up data from the beginning of the previous year’s April until the end of March of the current year.

Floor area (m2), moving annual total
