Area

These statistics apply the regional division of 1 January 2024 to the whole time series. Data for merged municipalities have been combined.

Information

Natural increase

Natural increase, or excess of births is the difference between the number of live births and deaths. If the number of live births is lower than that of deaths, natural population increase is negative.

Intermunicipal in-migration

Intermunicipal migration has been changed to correspond to the regional division of 1 January 2024, that is, migration between united municipalities has been transferred to intramunicipal migration.

Intermunicipal out-migration

Intermunicipal migration has been changed to correspond to the regional division of 1 January 2024, that is, migration between united municipalities has been transferred to intramunicipal migration.

Intermunicipal net migration

Net migration

Net migration is the difference between immigration and emigration.

Total net migration

Total net migration is the sum of net migration and intermunicipal net migration.

Marriages

Marriages where at least one of the spouses has resided permanently in Finland on the day the marriage was contracted. Includes also marriages of same-sex couples starting from 2017.

Divorces

Divorces where at least one of the spouses has resided permanently in Finland on the day the divorce was granted. Includes also divorces of same-sex couples starting from 2017.

Population increase

Population increase is the sum of natural increase, intermunicipal net migration and net migration. Population increase can also be negative.

Population correction

Population correction is the difference between total change and population increase. Corrections are mainly adjustments made later to errors occurring in handling of notices of removal.

Total change

Total change is the difference between the population of two consecutive statistical reference periods.

Population

Population at the end of the statistical reference period.
