Documentation of statistics

Area

These statistics apply the regional division of 1 January 2026 to the whole time series. Data for merged municipalities have been combined. Partial municipal mergers have not been taken into account in the years preceding the merger.

Family type

Families are grouped into the following types:
- married couple without children, opposite sexes
- married couple without children, same sex
- married couple with children, opposite sexes
- married couple with children, same sex
- cohabiting couple without children, opposite sexes
- cohabiting couple with children, opposite sexes
- cohabiting couple with common children, same-sex spouses
- registered male couple without children
- registered male couple with children
- registered female couple without children
- registered female couple with children
- mother and children
- father and children
Couple without children refers to a couple that has never had children or whose children no longer live with their parents.
Couples with children include not only couples with common children but also couples whose children are not common. Same-sex couples are, however, recorded as cohabiting couples only in case the couples have at least one common child in the dwelling.
For data protection reasons, same-sex married couples and couples in registered partnerships are classified in municipal tables together with opposite-sex married couples. For data protection reasons, same-sex cohabiting couples are classified in municipal tables together with opposite-sex cohabiting couples.

Age

Age refers to a person's age in whole years as at 31 December.

Information

Persons with the status of a child

Having the status of a child means that the person's family status is that of a child. In the family statistics children comprise the following persons, regardless of age, who live with their parents: biological children, adopted children and also biological children, adopted children and confirmed children of one of the spouses. Foster children and children in the care of the family are not classified as children.
