Documentation of statistics These statistics apply the regional division of 1 January 2024.
Free-time residences are not included in the building stock. The intended use of a building is determined according to the purpose for which the largest part of the gross floor area of the building is used. Starting from 2020 the Intended use of building is formed based on the Classification of Buildings 2018. Not all the classes in the building classification are included in the Statistics Finland's building stock.
The statistics are based mainly on the DVV building stock register, which includes information on heating methods. Information is collected during the construction phase as well as during renovations that require a building permit. Information on changes in heating mode may not be registered in the register, since the change may require maximum permission-related permisation.
According to a survey, petroleum heating in small houses is already significantly lower and geothermal heating more common than what the building stock register data indicate.
The building's heating fuel information for 2023 was supplemented with information from the energy certificate register, which contributed to e.g. the decrease in oil-heated buildings.
