Documentation of statistics When comparing data from different points in time, it should be noted that some of the changes may result from checks made in the register, changes in the processing of statistical data, or differences in data collection methods used in earlier years. Starting from the statistical year 2025, the main data source for the statistics was transferred from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency to the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). At the same time, the production process of the statistics was renewed at Statistics Finland. These changes may partly explain the differences observed in the statistics between different years. The building stock data describe the active building stock, meaning that demolished and destroyed buildings are removed from the data. Buildings that have been uninhabited for a long period are also removed, but they are added back to the stock if they return to residential use and become occupied again. The statistics use the most recent regional division.
