Documentation of statistics Origin is determined by the country of birth of the person's parents. A person whose parents or the only known parent were born abroad is considered to be of foreign background. A person whose one parent or both parents were born in Finland is of Finnish background. The data used in the total fertility rate of men are supplemented with those fathers for whom data were registered after the production of the annual statistics. The establishment of paternity usually means that data on father are obtained at the latest within three years of the child's birth, after which the acquisition of data decreases. Finally, around 1.5 to 2 per cent of children do not have data on their father in the register. Supplementing the data causes revisions to the total fertility rate of men around 2 to 5 years backwards. Small revisions prior to this are also possible. The revision of the total fertility rate of men with foreign background is bigger and extends further into previous years. Supplementing the data mainly raises the total fertility rate (around 0.01 units for those with Finnish background and estimated 0.01 to 0.15 units for those with foreign background).

Origin

The origin and background country data are explained on the Concepts webpage, see the link.

Information

Total fertility rate

The total fertility rate is obtained by adding up the fertility rates calculated for one year. The rate refers to the estimated number of children born to a woman, given that the fertility rate of that statistical year prevails during the whole reproductive period of this woman on condition that the woman does not die before the end of the said period.
