As a rule, the first researcher career stage consists of doctoral school students completing a doctoral degree and junior researchers. The second researcher career stage includes, for example, postdoctoral researchers. Tasks in accordance with the second and higher researcher career stages generally require a doctoral degree. Typical tasks of the third researcher career stage are university lecturer, senior researcher and university researcher. Professors, research directors and other occupational titles containing the most demanding teaching and research tasks belong to the fourth researcher career stage.
Other R&D personnel mainly include research support staff. The research shares are updated every three to four years based on the administrative data of universities. The research shares of the university's R&D personnel are utilised to calculate the universities' R&D personnel, full-time equivalents and expenditure.
