Persons living in low income households, households that experience severe material and social deprivation or households with low work intensity are considered being at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The reference period for the At Risk of Poverty or Social Exclusion indicator (AROPE) is the income reference year. Of the three components of the indicator, low income and low work intensity refer to the income reference year whereas severe material and social deprivation refers to the data collection year which is the year following the income reference year. Eurostat publishes data concerning the at risk of poverty or social exclusion indicator by data collection year. Eurostat revised the definitions of low work intensity and severe material deprivation included in the at risk of poverty or exclusion indicator in 2021. This table includes only time series data according to the new definition starting from the statistical reference year 2015. Data on risk of poverty or social exclusion according to the old definition for the period 2005 to 2019 can be found in the archive tables of the statistics on living conditions. The changes of the definitions are described in the concepts and definitions of the statistics on living conditions.
