Information

Deaths in road traffic accidents

A person who has died as a consequence of a road traffic accident known to the police within 30 days from the accident, excluding deaths from seizures.

Injured in road traffic accidents (incl. seriously injured)

A person who has not died (within 30 days of the accident) but has sustained injuries in the road traffic accident known to the police requiring medical care or observation in a hospital, treatment at home (sick leave) or operative treatment, such as stitches. If a person has sustained bruises, scratches or the like that do not require aforementioned treatment, they are not regarded as injured.

Seriously injured in road traffic accidents

A person who has not died (within 30 days of the accident) but has sustained injuries in the road traffic accident known to the police requiring medical care or observation in a medical care institution and who has visited a doctor within six days of the accident and the injury or injuries have been classified as serious in accordance with the AIS Abbreviated Injury Scale (AAAM, Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine).

Other seriously injured, accident not known to the police

Seriously injured in traffic accidents according to the Care Register (HILMO) of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) who are not connected to the road traffic accidents known to the police.
For each person the first treatment visit or period, indicating a road accident for which the person has arrived for treatment due to a sudden need for care without prior appointment or separate agreement, is taken into consideration. The seriousness of the injury is determined on the basis of the diagnosis made during that treatment visit or period.

All seriously injured in road traffic accidents based on HILMO

Seriously injured in traffic accidents according to the Care Register (HILMO) of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). Includes both cases that are not connected to the road traffic accidents known to the police and those that are not.
For unconnected persons, the figures may also include serious injuries occurring in an area outside the traffic area.

Total number of deaths and all seriously injured in road traffic accidents based on HILMO

1206a2 Negligent homicide, grossly negligent homicide in connection with drunkenness in traffic (offences known to the authorities).
A matter recorded in the police information system as an offence. The offence may have become known to the police, customs or border guard either as a report or in connection with another investigation. The offence is recorded in the statistics for the year in which it becomes known to the authorities. An offence refers to an act for which a punishment is decreed in legislation. The task of the police, customs and border guard is to investigate the offence, conduct a pre-trial investigation and transfer the solved offence to the prosecutor for consideration. In more lenient cases, the offence may be left unreported to the prosecutor on the grounds laid down in law. The statistical unit used is an offence. If several persons have taken part in the same offence together, the number of offences recorded is one. If several similar offences are committed at the same time, several of these offences can be recorded. The offence is recorded based on the municipality where the offence occurred. The offence may also have taken place abroad and a report of it is recorded if the police, customs or border guard have jurisdiction in the matter and the offence has concerned (as a suspect or victim) a Finnish citizen, a person permanently resident in Finland or a Finnish legal person.
