Underlying cause of death (ICD-10, 3-character level):
Only codes, which are accepted as an underlying cause of death are shown from the classification.
According to the international guideline by WHO the alcohol-related disease (alcoholism or alcoholic liver disease) was
preferred to the alcohol poisoning as the underlying cause of death in the statistics in 1998-2004. This rule is not valid since 2005.
According to an international guideline by WHO pneumonia is not accepted as the underlying cause of death if a chronic disease which
has weakened the organism is mentioned in the death certificate. In such cases the disease in question is recorded as the person's
underlying cause of death. The revision of the classification was gradually taken into use in 2005 and 2006. The adjustment cut the
number of deaths from pneumonia by around one third. The cases mainly moved to dementia and cerebrovascular diseases.
Since 2007 alcohol-induced acute pancreatitis belongs to K85 instead of K86.
A new code J09 was added 2009.
A new code W46 was added 2013. Before 2013, W45 included deaths due to this cause.
A new code C86 was added 2015. Before 2015, C84 included deaths due to this cause.
A new code K64 was added 2015 to replace I84.
